After years of traversing roads with a dashboard that told tales in a foreign tongue and remained cloaked in darkness, our VW campervan has received a much-needed upgrade.
The most significant change is the conversion of the speedometer from Kilometers per hour (KMH) to Miles per hour (MPH). This simple yet crucial modification allows for an immediate and accurate reading of the vehicle's speed, aligning it with the standard measurements of UK roads and making journeys safer and more intuitive.
Beyond the speedometer's practical update, the dashboard now shines in more ways than one. The previously non-functional dash lights have been expertly repaired, illuminating the gauges and controls for the first time in recent memory. This repair is not merely a convenience but a vital safety feature, ensuring the driver can clearly see the instruments during night-time journeys.
The restoration's attention to detail is evident in the aesthetic enhancements as well. The speedometer's original surround has been thoroughly cleaned, wiping away nearly 50 years of accumulated grime to reveal its original lustre. To further elevate the dashboard's appearance, chrome rings have been added to each gauge opening. These rings not only accentuate the instruments but also create a cohesive look that complements the van's steering wheel and other chrome accents.
The result is a dashboard that is both a nod to the past and a step into the present. The updated dashboard greatly improves the vehicle's functionality and safety while preserving its vintage spirit.
